University of Laghouat

The University of Laghouat is a university in the city of Laghouat, the capital city of Laghouat Province in Algeria, North Africa. It was established in 1986 and given full university status in 2001.
==Location==
Laghouat, in Algeria, lies at the crossing point of major east-west and north-south routes in the southern foothills of the Saharan Atlas Mountains, giving it the name "Gateway to the Desert". It is located south of the capital Algiers. Promoted as a university town in the program of decentralization to the Wilaya, training institutions were established in Laghouat in 1986.
==History==
Planned as a university center in the Five Year Plan for 1980–85, these intentions were revised in 1984 and an Ecole Normale Superieure d'Enseignement Technique (ENSET) and an Institute of Engineering Mechanics (INGM) were created in 1986.
The ENSET consisted of 314 student teachers trained by 23 teaching staff. Courses were started in Exact Sciences, Technology and Computer Science in 1988, in Engineering and in Mechanical Engineering and Electrical Engineering in 1990, Electronics in 1995, a Bachelor of Science Economics in 1991 and a BA in Arabic Language and Literature in 1994. The university degree applied (DEUA) was awarded in disciplines such as Mechanical Engineering and Electrical Engineering in 1988, the DEUA Civil Engineering 1989, DEUA Computer Management in 1990 and DEUA in Industrial Chemistry in 1996.
In 1997, the ENSET was converted into a University Center comprising four departments: Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Civil Engineering and Economics. Other departments were opened: Industrial Chemicals (1997), Information Technology, Law, Management (1998), Biology (2000) and Psychology (2000). Post-graduate studies had been offered in the Science and Engineering of Surfaces and Materials Engineering since 1995.
In 2001, under a proposed socio-economic revitalization of the entire region, these institutions received full university status, becoming the Amar Telidji University of Laghouat. The new university was given three faculties: Engineering Sciences; Law and Humanities; Economics and Management Sciences. New courses were offered in Architecture (2001) and in Agronomy (2002), the core curriculum in Sociology and Demography (2004) and English (2004) and two chains in short cycle: Maintenance in Electrical Engineering (2002) and Hydraulics (2002).
